Alabama’s Confederate veterans tax

The Civil War ended in 1865, yet Alabama still levies a Confederate veterans’ tax.

The tax was originally used to pay for the Alabama Confederate Soldiers’ Home, which closed in 1934. This tax is now used to maintain the Confederate Memorial Park located in Mountain Creek.

The Confederate veterans’ tax brings in about $400,000 every year.
