The Missouri bachelor tax
The state of Missouri levies a bachelor tax on all unmarried state residents between the ages of 21 and 50.
The tax was instituted nearly two centuries ago, in 1820. It was originally proposed to encourage men to get married. The tax is still on the books and starts at $1.
