No, really, watch the unemployment rate
The hard truth is that the country is long overdue for an actual, non-pandemic recession. The United States has had about 47 recessions of varying length in its history. The last “normal” recession was between late 2007 and mid-2009. If enough people literally can’t find work they can’t spend, either. That’s a strong precursor to a recession.
