Community property laws
Keeping separate bank accounts when married is not a fix-all in a community property state. In those states, all money, assets, debts and properties are shared equally by both spouses. Even if one spouse is solely responsible for reckless financial behavior, debt, gambling, or bankruptcy, the other spouse will be equally liable for repaying those debts.
