California’s vending machine fruit tax

Fresh fruit sales are wholly tax exempt in California — except when any fruit is sold via vending machine. Since 2013, a 33% sale tax has been levied on all fruit sold through vending machines throughout the state.

There has never been real explanation for the tax. It may be just a bid to collect more money from vending machine sales.
