High poverty levels
The federal poverty standard is a family of four living on less than $25,750. Over 12% of Americans live in poverty. In 2017, over 19% of New Yorkers lived in poverty. That number was about 20.6% in 2014. According to these standards, more than 1.5 million New Yorkers live below the poverty line.
