Many believe that the platinum and gold used in making prestige watches is why they are so expensive. Yet this is not the case. At the moment, 18-karat gold current trades at $40 per gram. A $40,000 watch weighing 200 grams should cost $8,000 in just gold. But non-gold mechanical components inside the case also contribute to the watches total weight — and value.
