Tax refunds and bonuses
If you are about to get a tax refund, use all of it — or at least most of it — to bulk up your emergency account. The same rule applies to bonuses as well. As tempting as it might be to spend it on a vacation or buy another flat screen, saving up for a rainy day is far more important.
