William H. Danforth launched the Robinson-Danforth Commission Company in 1894 to produce animal feed for farm animals. In 1902, the company was renamed Ralston Purina. The Purina brand became synonymous with quality pet food products in the 20th century. Swiss international food corporation Nestle bought Purina in 2001 for $10 billion.
