5 Outrageously Expensive Objects Sold at Auction

Marie Antoinette’s pearl and diamond pendant

Marie Antoinette was France’s last queen before the French Revolution. Antoinette is alleged to have said “Let them eat cake,” a cynical aside upon learning her subjects were starving and lacked bread. (There’s no proof she said it.) Her pearl and diamond pendant sold for $36 million at auction at Sotheby’s in 2018.
