Winnings lost to bad debt management
Suzanne Mullins won $4.2 million in the Virginia lotto in 1993. Mullins opted for yearly payments. She paid $1 million to cover the medical bills of an ailing son-in-law. Mullins then took a loan to get her winnings faster but couldn’t pay it back. By 2004 she was $154,000 in debt and flat broke.
