Check Your Drawers: This Collector’s Penny Is Worth $1.7 Million

1944-S Lincoln Steel Penny

WW2-era zinc-steel pennies were unpopular, rusty, and didn’t work well in vending machines. In 1944, a new composition of 95% copper and 5% tin were set for striking. A striking error produced a few uncirculated zinc-steel pennies. This rare 1944-S Lincoln Steel Penny sold for $373,750 in August 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland.
