Contact the IRS when in doubt
You can be imprisoned for lying on tax returns, failing to file, and for tax fraud. However, simply being financially unable to pay taxes is not a crime. You can pay in installments or negotiate a compromise amount. Contact the IRS office of the Taxpayer Advocate if you can’t pay your taxes, but don’t just stop. It’s more trouble than its worth.
