The dawning digital age, a boon to e-commerce businesses, has been a bane to the traditional brick-and-mortar retail industry. Scores of businesses shut down more than 11,000 physical locations in 2020.
About 150 million square feet of retail space was closed last year, according to industry researcher CoStar Group, keeping up with annual close rates over the past several years.
