Thousands of individual parts that comprise the movement need to be assembled by hand by watch craftsmen of unique skills. Some complex movements can take one year to complete. This time-consuming process is incredibly expensive. Watchmakers don’t come cheap. A competent watchmaker in Switzerland makes more than $100,000 a year.
